Planning on taking a few members of the family for a 2-week visit to China. First time for one member. Looking for Tour Operator recommendations. Preferrably a Tour Operator operating from the US.

Thanks.

DANIEL1Y,

A friend of mine and I just booked a 15 day tour (fully escorted) with General Tours. General Tours is a AAA Preferred travel partner. I've never booked a tour before. I checked out all the hotels included on the tour and they look very good. The tour includes Beijing, Xian,Shanghai, Guilin and Hong Kong. All breakfasts are included and several lunches and dinners. They take you to the sites and all transfers from airports, trains etc. are included. I've travel to Europe without escort but decided that if I want to go to Asia I needed some help. And this forum has been a GREAT help. Go to General Tours on the internet. I booked the Classic Cities of China tour for June 18-July 2. Good luck.

How did you find out which hotels for your tour? "superior first class hotels" at General Tours' website doesn't tell me a whole lot.

Anyone have any comments after coming back from one of General Tours' packages?

Thanks.

I recommend Wild China (www.wildchina.com) Their trips are a bit on the pricier side but they were by far the best travel company I used. I believe I went on three different trips with three different companies (other than wild china) and they were each a nightmare. One of them, the guide didn't speak a lick of english! Wild China specializes in adventure travel and it's the best way to really see China beyond the standard Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an (not that there is anything wrong with that, but there is just so much more to see!). They have fully licensed english speaking guides and they are very professional. The founder is a young Harvard graduate who I would trust with my life! She's great and they seem to think of everything.

If your just looking to do the most popular tourist areas I'd recommend www.travelindochina.com. Based in Vietnam but aimed solely at western customers with a western guide with additional local guide setup. Maybe the best guided tour company I'v ever used, well organised plus they avoided the whistle spot tour mentality that seems to be all to common in china.

DANIEL1Y,

You can request their travel magazines which list the hotels that they use. For my trip they are superior ist class and luxury. They include Traders in Beijing, Sofitel in Shanghai, Sheraton in Xian, Sheraton in Guilin and Marco Polo Gateway in Hong Kong. I looked at all these on the internet and they seem fine to me...just as good as the 3 star hotels I stay in while in Paris.
