| Need advice on most suitable city | |

 | Hey, I would be delighted if somebody could give me advice. Myself and 2 friends are planning on finding teaching jobs in a Chinese City early next year. I was wondering which city would be best considering: 23 years old, Degree holders. Enjoys socialising, would be very interested in getting involved in the chinese culture. Things to do during the day and a pretty good nightlife. Climate to be sunny and bright. Access to a beach would also be appealing. If i could compare it to thailand i enjoyed bangkok but the my favourite place was Chiang Mai. Slow enough paced but enough things to do and bars to go to. Also maybe take into account we will be on a salary of around 6000 |

| Most Chinese cities won't be within spitting distance of a beach, you do already know that, I hope? Hong Kong might be the best fit, but it's not really considered part of mainland China. Otherwise, try Sanya or Haikou if you really need the beach and sun. How do you already know your salary if you don't have a job yet? Shanghai, Beijing and perhaps Guangzhou, along with Hong Kong, are the most popular, but good jobs there are also the most difficult to find, especially if you're fresh graduates. Other cities you might want to consider would be Hangzhou, Kunming, Chengdu and Qingdao. |

| GUEST17126 | I haven't lived in China but I travel there quite frequently. I have some favourite cities - Hangzhou is one of them, which I think would be a good choice for you. Beautiful area around the West Lake, lot's of cafes and restaurants, I have heard of great night life too. In addition there are many places you can visit in the area, on daytrips or over weekends. The Putuoshan island is accessible for a weekend trip, and there are beaches there, though I wouldn't go to China for beaches. Another nice city, supposedly with really good climate is Kunming in the Yunnan province. Interesting minority areas around, though Kunming is a big Chinese city. And there is Guiyang, which few people go to. I have really grown fond of Guiyang. The surrounding area has beautiful countryside and minority villages. The city is nice with the usual big city stuff, Walmart, shopping malls, restaurants and cafes, some nice parks and river walks. No beaches though, as it is far inland. I believe the climate is quite pleasant, as it is at an altitude. Be aware that the climate in mid-China is hot and rainy in Summer and cold in the Winter. I wouldn't compare China to Thailand, it is very dynamic and fast-paced. Why don't you check out travelblogs from China, there are quite a few written by overseas teachers. That will give you an idea of what to expect. Wishing you best of luck |

| Yes, you shouldn't even think about comparing China to Thailand... and the best recommendation if you do is that you should go to Hainan. But whatever the "6000" means in your salary I'm not sure, but I doubt you will earn that much in Hainan, IF you can find a job there. Same problem with Qingdao, the salaries are much lower there because all foreign teachers want to go and work there because it's by the sea. Dalian is popular and on the coast, big expat crowd and perhaps a better chance of a good salary but climate is below freezing in the winter. |

| Thank you for your reply. Maybe i was looking in other areas as were 6000 was a guidelibe for teachers salary, but im sure your right about the areas mentioned. would you have a good standard of living on an average teachers salary in those places mentioned? |

| The salary varies widely according to the kind of school you're teaching at, your qualifications, your work experience, location in China etc. |
