I am taking my first trip to China (Beijing and Shanghai) in February 2009. I am a little apprehensive since although I will be with a travel group, I will most likely spend lots of the trip alone. Any suggestions to meet people or events that would make the trip more fun would be appreciated! Thanks, --Jeff

Be brave and just go for it. I have done 3 full trips alone now and have found everything great, lots to see and do and the locals will be friendly. You will be in 2 big cities so should have no problems. I go to small towns and cities and still have plenty to get on with all day.

I haven't explored Beijing yet, but I found Shanghai easy to get around, as a foreigner. Make sure you have a map to show taxi drivers, as all those I encountered didn't speak any English. The markets in Shanghai are great - especially the Old Shanghai area for antiques and souvenirs - but if you are a foreigner they will sometimes try to charge you up to 20 times as much. So.. lots of haggling necessary, and start low! If you like jazz, there are some great clubs (and great restaurants) in the French Concession. Enjoy your trip :)

Hi Jeff, Welcome to China. Beijing and Shanghai are two top developed cities in China, they are very modern and international, many people can speak good english, so I don't think you will have any problem in these two cities. wish you have a great trip to China. Bill

Of course you will experience some culture shock, but you should find you get into the run of things after a couple of days. If you haven't booked accom yet, I strrongly recommend staying in youth hostels (yhachina.com) as the staff are normallyvery helpful and you will meet other foreigners...very useful to have company of others when you brave eating out, travel etc.
