I'm currently in Beijing but my X visa expires soon. I want to now travel China.

The best solution seems to be
- go to Hong Kong
- get a 30 day L visa
- get two (maximum) 30-day extensions within China

Problem is I may want to travel over 3 months. So after my second extension runs out, I have to either get an agent to change my L to an F, or leave China and apply for a new L.

Any suggestions for a better solution?

Agents have told me they can sometimes change X to F visas within China, but not right now (Chinese New Year).

Also what are the current requirements for L visas? (e.g. proof of accommodation)

Just go to Hongkong and you may just get an F visa no questions asked.

If not apply for a three month tourist visa or thew longest you can get. They do issue them for lengthy periods.

Why not ask your University to apply for a tourist visa NOW.

I wouldn't ask the uni, in my view you are safer doing it yourself. I find that your exact requirements are often misunderstood.
