How long? What are the rates like? Which is the cheapest? Btw, if I need to book flight within china need to have a china based credit card right? for trains and bus tickets easy to buy there? Lastly, am thinking to fly to Beijing for a short while then to Kunming, what are other options than flight? How long? Is Beijing to Kunming cheaper than Chengdu to Beijing?? THANKS SO MUCH!!

Cheapest will be hard seat train, for both. However these are both rather long trips by train, so I would really NOT advise going by hard seat. At least get yourself a hard sleeper. Plane will be the most expensive.
You don't need a local credit card to buy plane tickets here, RMB cash will be sufficient.
Train tickets go on sale 10 days in advance and can sometimes be difficult to get, especially impossible around the 1st week of May and October, and around Chinese New Year.
Beijing -- Kunming is not likely to be cheaper than Chengdu -- Beijing, due to the longer distance.
The answers to your questions aren't going to be that helpful to your planning as your questions were rather vague to start with. You might do better to tell us your intended destinations, and perhaps ask what would be the most suitable means of transport for your timeframe and budget.
