Two foreign nationals marrying in China
Feb 10, 2009 02:54
guestJeremy My fiancee and I are planning to get married in Hangzhou next year. We are both Canadian citizens. She was born in Hangzhou, but renounced her Chinese citizenship over 10 years ago.

Almost all of her family are Chinese citizens and residents of Hangzhou, and we want to share the wedding with them. I am just unsure if it will be possible to make it official as we are both non-resident foreigners.

Is it possible for two non-resident foreigners to marry in Hangzhou?

Jeremy, all weddings in China are performed as a civil wedding.. No witnesses, no vows, no holding hand, no “you may now kiss the Bride” stuff: just a checking of documents. Very similar to registering a car really.
The real wedding is celebrated at a dinner, some short time after, were friends and family gather to give speeches and hopefully also give presents.
Australian/Chinese who hold an Australian passport are warned not to use any Chinese documents that they may still have while traveling in China. I would think that the same warning may well be given to Canadian Chinese.
So if you fiancé did apply at her once place of residence to get married there may be a problem.
I suggest that you contact your consulate first in Canada to have their opinion on the matter.
Cheers, Dodger.
