Hi all,

We're planning to travel to China by train this April from Vietnam. We need you help to work out our itinerary.

-How to get to Fenghuang from Nanning?
-How to get to Wuyuan from Fenghuang?
-How can I go to Yongdinh from Fenghuang/Nanning?

Is there any big issues if we can't speak Chinese at all?

Many thanks in advance for your advices.

Yes, you'll have some problems if you're unable to understand Chinese, and even more if you're trying to do this with limited time and/or limited money.

No direct trains for Nanning -- Fenghuang. Fenghuang has no train station of its own, the nearest are Jishou and then Huaihua. There're also no direct trains for Nanning -- Jishou/Huaihua, you'll have to transit in Changsha.

Nanning -- Changsha:
T6 (0910--2118) 12h08min
T190 (1050--2303) 12h13min
K316/K317 (1207--0302) 14h55min
1582 (1435--0604) 15h29min
1628 (2014--1134) 15h20min
2514 (2109--1230) 15h21min

Changsha -- Jishou:
K533/K536 (0239--0934) 6h55min
N569/N572 (2018--0535) 9h17min --> originates in Changsha, should be easier to get sleeper tickets
N582/N583 (2217--0529) 7h12min

From Jishou, take a bus to Fenghuang.

There's no train station at Wuyuan. Try taking train Huaihua (reachable by bus from Fenghuang) -- Hangzhou, then a bus Hangzhou -- Wuyuan. Here's a list of trains originating in Huaihua for this route.

Huaihua -- Hangzhou East:
K534/K535 (1008--0750) 21h42min
1528 (1756--1202) 18h06min

You'll then need to take a taxi from Hangzhou East train station to Hangzhou West long-distance bus station. There's a bus to Wuyuan leaving at 0920, fare 115 RMB.

It'll be much easier getting to Yongding from Nanning rather than Fenghuang.

Nanning -- Yongding:
K232/K229 (0512--0250) 21h38min

If you're going from Fenghuang, there're no direct trains to Yongding. Take train Huaihua -- Xiamen, then a bus/train Xiamen -- Yongding.

Huaihua -- Xiamen:
1948/1945 (0349--0656) 27h07min
K335/K334 (0530--0747) 26h17min

Xiamen -- Yongding:
K230/K231 (1600--2221) 6h21min
K298/K299 (1629--2250) 6h21min

Hi Ellyse,

Many thanks for your detailed advice.

I know that it's possible to take train from Nanning to Jishou passing/stopping by Zhangjiajie. Could you please advise me the train time from Zhangjiajie to Jishou?

Is it possible to take a train from Huaihua to Chengdu? Can we buy train ticket when arriving to Huaihua from Fenghuang? People said that it must be bought 2 days before departure, is that right?

There is a bus from Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong every morning but I couldn't find out about the bus returns from Huanglong to Chengdu. Please advise us. We're hurried up to discover China. It seems that this trip is very interesting.

Thanks in advance for your experienced advices.

Where did you get the idea that there're direct trains for Nanning -- Zhangjiajie? This is NOT a direct route. Also, if you look on a map, Zhangjiajie is to the north of Jishou, Nanning is to the south of Jishou. A route going between Nanning and Jishou would NOT pass by Zhangjiajie.

Yes, there're trains for Huaihua -- Chengdu. Tickets go on sale 10 days before departure date, trying to get a sleeper only 2 days in advance would not be advisable. Also, none of the Huaihua -- Chengdu trains originate at Huaihua, and it's not a major station, so the number of sleepers allocated to this station would be extremely little.

Huaihua -- Chengdu:
K651/K654 (0020--1438) 14h18min
K422/K423 (1400--0544) 15h44min
K577/K580 (1822--0730) 13h08min
1987/1986 (2240--1327) 14h47min
K192/K193 (2308--1634) 17h26min

Sorry, no idea about Huanglong -- Chengdu bus timings. The only information I have that might be of use to you is at http://www.jiuzhai.com/language/english/visit_travel.html -- you might want to email the website and ask for your information.
