CHINA MUST TEACH OBAMA / U.S. A GOOD LESSON...

guestHAN 12 March 2009:
US warships head for South China Sea after standoff with China

A potential conflict was brewing last night in the South China Sea after President Obama dispatched heavily armed American destroyers to the scene of a naval standoff between the US and China at the weekend.

Mr Obama’s decision to send an armed escort for US surveillance ships in the area follows the aggressive and co-ordinated manoeuvres of five Chinese boats on Sunday. They harassed and nearly collided with an unarmed American vessel.

Washington accused the Chinese ships of moving directly in front of the US Navy surveillance ship Impeccable, forcing its crew to take emergency action, and to deploy a high-pressure water hose to deter the Chinese ships. Formal protests were lodged with Beijing after the incident.

On a day that Mr Obama and his senior officials met the Chinese Foreign Minister, Yang Jiechi, in Washington, Beijing showed no sign of backing down. Its military chiefs accused the unarmed US Navy ship of being on a spying mission.

The US keeps a close eye on China’s arsenal, including its expanding fleet of submarines in the area. Washington says that the confrontation occurred in international waters, but Beijing claims nearly all the South China Sea as its own, putting it in conflict with five other nations that have claims over different parts of the waters.

The episode complicated fragile military relations between the US and China, which appeared to have improved after the two held defence talks in Beijing last month.

Mr Obama yesterday urged more military dialogue with China to avoid similar incidents after talks with Mr Yang, the White House said. “The President also stressed the importance of raising the level and frequency of military-to-military dialogue,” it said.

A hotline was established between the Chinese Defence Ministry and the Pentagon in April last year, but it was not used during or after Sunday’s standoff, defence officials said. The US Government immediately protested to Chinese authorities after the incident, about 75 miles south of Hainan Island.

Beijing has rejected the US account and demanded that the United States cease what it calls illegal activities in the South China Sea. The Chinese maintain the area is part of the country’s exclusive economic zone.

Washington insists that the area is part of international waters and that US ships have a legal right to operate there.

This April, the Chinese navy will celebrate its 60 anniversary this April and a large-scale marine parade will be held at Qingdao, Shangdong Province. Aircraft carrier should have been the top priority of the long-term national strength planning. That reminds us of NATO bombing PRC embassy in Belgrade, which was definitely not an accident as NATO stated. China is not as aggressive as the west and the middle east, but we know what is
人善被人欺, 马善被人骑 and we are gifted with the nature of 后发制人 without violence!

Oh, please. The South China Sea Islands like the Spratleys and Paracels have been disputed for years. If anybodies ship goes near them it shouldn't be a cause for alarm. Taiwan, the Phillipines and Vietnam are probably angry at China's actions too. The rights of free passage are expected and no one country should interfere.

'Rights of passage' is one thing; US government vessel conducting surveys near China's coast is a totally different matter. What China did was appropriate and right to chase the American survey ship off the coast of Hainan Island (China's submarine home base).

The Spratleys are well documented in Chinese annals as Chinese territories; China is right to claim and defend the island against foreign encroachment. It is good to know that the Chinese Navy is sending more patrols in the area. About time China show the flag more...

Just because the word "China" is in the name South China Sea does not automatically make it China's. Yes the U.S. conducts suveys there but China also does the same off the coast of the U.S. (12 miles out..international waters) and you don't see or hear about U.S. ships going out to harrass them. Apparantly China is the only country who seems to have a problem with this.China did sign the international waters treaty in 1980 by the way. China is getting a little too big for their pants. BTW China's finance minister went to the U.S. last week to ask that the U.S. honour their word and not devalue the dollar, well why should the U.S. honour our word to a country that does not honour theirs. If the U.S. devalues the dollar China would most likely fall into turmoil the next day. So my advice would be to get some people skills and grow up if you want to sit at the big boy table with the U.S., U.K. Aus., Europe...etc.

FedReserves can absorb half of treasuries bought by China through pringting paper money, do you really believe US will do that?

Puppy is always puppy. The Phillipines did not realize China would react after they BEG their master US for supporing its harrassing in Chinese exclusive zone.
