I read that the Great Wall is very touristy and somewhat Disney-esque. Is that true? What's it like? It's one of the places that I am scheduled to visit in June through the escorted tour. I've seen pictures and the wall looks awsome. Is it as breath taking as the pictures suggest?

Yes, it's very spectacular! It seems you really expect your trip to china. To read more about China before you go must be very helpful to your journey.

Sporttennis, it depends to which part you want to go. Where are you going with your guide? It also depends on your own physical state you are in. For my parents or any senoir traveller Badaling or most parts of Muntiayu is just fine. Everything new, more banisters than steps, many other tourists and much "touristshopping". But if you are fit enough do some hiking around Simatai. (of course many seniors are as well fit -before members of the grey panthers get offended) My personal favourite is Simatai. I described my impression of this part like the following Tour Tip: Simatai is the place to be for the true ancient Great Wall without masstourism and tourist traps. The wall goes up on the thin mountain ridge looking like a dragons back. It`s in the original state without the newest renovations like in Badaling, which is more like a Disney Land. In Simatai the wall is broken, steps are missing and trees grow on the Towers. Some parts are so steep you need to go on your feet and hands! Be aware, there are no banisters stopping you from falling down the cliffs. Here you can enjoy the silence of this magnificent world heritage on your own. I?e been there with a friend on our own for a whole day - not one single soul came passing by. It was great! (maybe luck, too!)

I hope to experience it is as you just described. The excursion is from Beijing so I really don't know what part of the wall we'll see.
