Has anyone taken an escorted tour?

Anyone? I need to hear experiences with escorted tours. Are they worth it? Was it a good experience?

I'm a Canadian who lived and worked in China off and on for two years, and for my money, escorted tours are the only way to see the major tourist attraction. Day-long tours for the Great Wall and Terracotta Warriors, local tour guides for hire at entrances to Forbidden City, Summer Palace, etc.
