There are a lot of expats want to import their own car from abroad into China, but complicated Chinese laws and regulations force them to give up. Someone may ask: why should I take my own car into China? It is more easier to buy one China.
Here let me explain the advantages of taking personal to China.

1. Save a lot of money.
For example, 06 ML350, 27000miles,excellent condition, vehicle price $30000. Shipping it to Shanghai, paying customs tax and acquistion tax, dealing with import steps, then finishing import issues and title, totally you have paid less than 500,000RMB . But if you buy a similar one in China, after paying the acquistion and title fee, you have to pay about 620,000RMB . The most important thing is: in China, there is no standard for used car, you can't get any car history report and guarantee of quality.

2. Save more time. For example, if you want to order a brand-new Cayenne 3.6, you have to wait for at least 6 months and pay more than 880,000RMB(base car). If you buy a car from US, from making payment to getting the car(finish all the steps), just 2 months and pay 730,000RMB(with more options and better vehicle condition). For luxury vehicles with bigger engines, the price of buying abroad is at least 90% of buying in China. Everyone knows that imported vehicles prices are several times of American prices.

Someone may complain: If my Porsche Cayenne (3.2, 06,30000miles) is located in US, just $30000, If I take it to China, I have to pay another amount of 300,000RMB, It is not worthy of taking. How can you explain?
To get this car you just pay less than 500,000RMB. If you buy a similar car in China, you have to pay more than 620,000RMB,this means you "earned" more than 120,000RMB(about $17500).

Every one has his understanding of this question. Just make your decision.

GUEST19514 Good advice, but what expat in his right mind wants to drive in China? There is no enforcement of whatever rules may exist, no stop signs, no driver training, no concept whatsoever of right of way...The list goes on. Expats, do yourself a huge favor and leave your car at home.

Everyone knows that vehicle prices in China are more expensive than other countries because of heavy customs tax and guarantee of dealer's profit.
If you take a car from abroad, compare with you buy one in China, you could save more than 100,000RMB. In financial crisis, to save money means to "earn" money, if you change your angle of thinking. Right?

GUEST11772 What is needed to bring your car from Laos into China ? Planning to make a trip there in december.
Thanks for any help.

@ guest19514 : if you have travelled around the world then you know what you're in for, it's not the only country where driving is amusing entertainment... Drive carefully, weigh the risks and don't bring a new car.
But you are right, it's not for the less adventurous.

your calculations are fishy, in any case you are paying between 1.32 and 1.44 times the value of the vehicles as an extra. I guess if you take the last example doing the following is cheaper:

1) sell the car in USA and get approx 200K RMB
2) take that 200K RMB add 420K and buy the car NEW in china
3) so you only need to come up with additional 420K

that's less then the 500K RMB...

GUEST37232 Since July 1st, there is no more 小贸 cars.
小贸 = not imported via authorized distributor.
In other words, no more used cars, because authorized distributor only import new cars.

Therefore, 外商自带(foreign citizens importing for self-use) can only bring in new cars.
Now, you need permit to import in this case, that permit needs to be authorized by manufacture/distributor.
Which means, in theory, if you want to import a BMW, only BMW China can authorize the importation for you.

Bottom line, as I said several times:
For a regular car that can be bought in China, buy it in China. It's not worth the trouble to import it then pay taxes, you aren't saving anything, what's the point?

Btw, before July 1st, it was easier to import, but paying taxes could not be avoided, so you aren't losing out financially.

No, you need to pay the tax for the car as well even if you have a foreign expert licens. Also, the car could be left in China one year later when you leaves China, but still you need to go to the local customs to complete procedures.

GUEST11284 I want to bring a car to china to drive thru the country. Then I want to leave it in China. (Sell it?)

1. Can I bring a used car or should it be a new car?
2. Do I just contact a shipper company or do I contact the Chinese Government first
3. Once in China any regulation on how I dispose of the Car? can I leave it with friends I will be staying with if I want (probably) or can I take out an ad in a local paper to sell it if I want?
