Train travel in China?? Help!

We want to take the o/n train from Beijing to Xian and then another one from Xian to Shanghai. Is it necessary to purchase train tickets in advance? Or is it pretty easy to buy them at the station? Do they sell out? Please help! Thanks!

I could help you out with the Beijing -- Xi'an and Xi'an -- Shanghai train tickets.
