Is it true that foreigners w/ tourist visa are not allowed to seek employment in China? It was stated in the website that " A foreigner staying in China with a tourist visa is not allowed to engage in activities beyond the capacity as a tourist, such as employment, religious propaganda and illegal journalist interviewing. Violators of this stipulation will be punished."

If you are on a tourist visa, you cannot (legally) work in China. You need to obtain a Z visa from a company/school or open up your own business and get, I believe, an F visa. Many foreign part time workers have a X (study) or L (tourist) visa, but technically that's illegal.

Dionne: It is odd, the rules say you cannot 'seek' work in China. If the word was corerectly chosen that means you cannot look and ask for work and then go thru correct procedures to get the appropriate visa (typically a Z). However, you will have no problems doing this, just looking is not a problem (legal or otherwise).

By the way, the visa side of opening a business is not as easy as the last post implies...an F visa does not really entitle you to do this.
