There's an excellent thread on the Lonely Planet ThornTree about travelling in Qinghai province: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=742917

Great alternative there is plenty to see and this would be a good time to travel there. Google and you'll be surprised what you can unearth about the province. Also consider nearby Gansu

Thanks again to both of you!!
Thanks Ellyse for the Lonely Planet link! Yushu seems like the real Tibet without paying huge amonts of money to travel agencies...
Will it be green by this time of the year? :-)
I'm going to investigate as it looks a bit difficult to travel around there..
And what do you reccommend in Gansu?

Sorry, unfortunately I haven't been to Yushu so I can't comment. I would suggest that you contact Jamin of Tibetan Connections (he's Losang on ThornTree) and ask for his advice. From what I heard from him previously (we finally met up 2 years ago in Xining), Yushu or the way leading to it could still be snowed under in the height of summer.
For Gansu, my top picks would be Dunhuang and Jiayuguan. Xiahe would be nice, but AFAIK it's not open to foreigners right now. You'll probably need to transit in Lanzhou at least once, and it's not such a bad place to spend a few hours or a day. Linxia is predominantly Hui (Muslims of Arab-Chinese descent), and it's halfway between Lanzhou and Xiahe. Here're a few links to my VirtualTourist travel pages for places in Gansu province. They're pretty good, if I might say so myself!
