I am Jesse Wellman, an American living in Boston, I was working as a foreign English teacher in Yulin, a small city in the northern part of Shaanxi province. One of my adventures with Gary consisted of a two-hour motorcycle ride from Yulin to his parents’ home near the Yellow River. His family welcomed me into their home, which is a series of caves built into the side of a mountain. They cooked for us, and having never seen a foreigner before, they treated me with the utmost hospitality and warmth. It is a very natural place, but Gary was quick to warn me not to romanticize it too much; his parents’ lifestyle is far from easy. During Gary’s college years, his father worked extra hard on his date harvests to pay tuition costs. The tension between this traditional lifestyle and Gary’s hunger for a more cosmopolitan lifestyle gave me a good sense of the strange place in which China finds itself in the modern world.
Gary is now back living in Xi’an, giving tours for a large company. I would like to persuade you to hire him as your personal tour guide for any length of time from a few days to a month (the maximum length of time China will give you a travel visa for). Two weeks, I think, would be an ideal amount of time if you can’t get more time off from work at once, but don’t want to buy an expensive plane ticket for less than two weeks of vacation. Whether you want to see all the huge tourist attractions in Xi’an, a smaller city (Yulin), rural areas such as Gary’s hometown, or any combination of these, Gary is the perfect Chinese guide to hire. He is well versed in Chinese history, philosophy, language, and, of course, tourism. The best part of this opportunity, which I want to stress, is how cheap it all is. You might find a round trip place ticket to Xi’an for $1500 if you book a couple of months ahead of time. Apart from that, you won’t spend more than $500 a week, INCLUDING EVERYTHING. Whether you want to take a crowded Chinese bus for the experience, to rent a car, or a taxi, or whatever, Gary knows how to do everything and how to do it at the best price.
Feel free to contact me in Boston with any questions, if China seems very foreign to you and you’d like to talk to an American who is in this country and has been where you would be going with Gary. My cell phone number is (978) 505-5295 and my email is gmail.com|jessewellman. I can answer many questions about Chinese travel, Visa acquisition (going through Travisa, which has a web site), and of course I would love to talk more about what a generous, fun, reliable guy Gary is. Besides emailing him at 126.com|gary1121. you could actually talk to him voice-to-voice using a free program that you can download called Skype. His skype is gary19821121.
