A short time ago, a pop concert was staged at the National Stadium known as the Bird’s Nest, which attracts 60,000 spectators. The performances were brilliant. All seems very well except that the cost of drinking water is expensive. Spectators were required to undergo a security check when entering the Bird’s Nest and they were not allowed to take “bottled water” into the Bird’s Nest. The pop concert lasted about 3 hours and spectators can’t endure thirst. They had to pay the high-priced water. However, the water was sold at a very high price there, say a paper cup of water costs 10 Yuan. The vendors in the Bird’s Nest have a monopoly of the drinking water. A small paper cup of water is worth 10 Yuan? The profit they made is enormous. China’s mouthpiece People’s Daily released a news article criticizing the case. Although the vendors are not against the law, they did lack business ethics and social morality. I can’t help thinking that the price of water and food are overpriced in China’s railway stations. A cup of water is worth 10 Yuan?

Monopoly has never been good for consumers. Monopoly led to the hiking price and degrading quality in a market-economy.
