is it best to book all train trips before leaving home if dates are known? eg should i be booking/ paying train tickets via internet prior to travelling in china? is this necessary/advisable? or is it just as easy to book/pay as you go?

GUEST06153 no need, all u need is get enough cash and watch your wallet carefully. most of the bookings in china is useless.(except hotels and flights). go to any train station and ask for the ticket you need. then you will get it. (except the chinese new year time, thats a bad time for any trip)

Good grief. I don't recommend buying most tickets only when you want to travel as most probably sleepers and most seats would be sold out.
But neither is it recommended to buy train tickets through those online agencies which charge an arm and a leg.
What train tickets do you need? I might be able to help. Email me at yahoo.com|ellyse99 and put "TravelChinaGuide" and your own username (eg Sahara) in the subject line, thanks.
