Hi GuestCraig, sure, if you need to visit those 3 cities, it's certainly better to go Zhongshan-Foshan-Shenzhen, without zig-zag down to HongKong. Regarding the transport modes, it depends... If you go to visit some company/factory, then best way is to ask them to drive you from Zhongshan to Foshan (if they don't offer that already). Reason is that both Zhongshan and Foshan are terribly wide areas, so first you need to know in which sub-city (town, municipality, even village) are those places, actually it can be very near but also very far (I had experienced both, in case of Zhongshan-Foshan trips). Cheers, Sasha/Alex

If you had the money to splurge then it would probably be great to get driven around to all 3 places so that you don't need to worry about getting lost! Other than for Hong Kong -- Zhongshan, I think that would be the fastest.

Do you have a multi-entry or at least a double-entry visa for China? You'll need one, if you're planning to do Hong Kong -- Zhongshan -- Hong Kong -- Shenzhen. Otherwise, save on all the shutting around and just go Hong Kong -- Zhongshan -- Shenzhen -- Hong Kong. There's nothing holy about staying every night in Hong Kong. If you want to go directly from Hong Kong airport to Zhongshan, I don't think there's much point waiting till 1540 for the only ferry departure. Take a bus instead. The company Eternal East has buses to Zhongshan departing at 0825, 0925, 1025, 1125 and 1205. Fare is 250 HKD, journey time around 3.5 hours.

Mainland meaning where? Shenzhen? Guangzhou? Zhuhai? I'm not sure which of these places would have ferry connections to Zhongshan. Also, if you include the time you spend in transit and waiting, it might not save you much time to insist on going by ferry instead of bus from Hong Kong airport.

Thank you very much Ellyse, you are very helpful. We have decided that it would be best to do our business first in Shenzen the day we arrive in Hong Kong. After all we don't want to travel in a bus for 3.5hrs to Zhongshan immediately after a long international flight to Hong Kong. We will travel to Zhongshan from Shenzen the following day, probably by bus if there is no alternative. Does anyone know if there are ferry's from Shenzen to Hong Kong to avoid a 3hr bus trip, if it is possible?

| Yes, there're ferries for Hong Kong airport -- Shekou which take 30 mins, fare 220 HKD. The earliest departure is at 0900, the next two are 1015 and 1100. For Shenzhen -- Zhongshan, I don't think there're ferries. Bus would take 2-2.5 hours, departing from Luohu long-distance bus station (around every 25 mins 0650--2100) and Futian long-distance bus station (from 0735 to 2025).
