Avoid taxi misunderstandings in China?

One my friend told me that he had quite a hard time when he was in Beijing to communicate with taxi drivers. My friend introduced me two websites: Guanxi and Geogini which provide you location information in Chinese and English via SMS/internet or something like that … Anyone has ever tried those services? Do they work on foreigners mobile? I went on their websites but it’s not very clear and I would prefer some feedback to know if it’s really useful or just a crappy mobile/internet tool. I know it’s somehow a small detail and perhaps I shouldn’t bother with that but I had my amount of troublesome taxi misunderstandings when I was in Vietnam  Thank You for your answer Cheers, Emilie

ELLYSE Points: Join Date: Oct 30, 2005 Status: Offline	Used them a few times (I have a Shanghai SIM card though) and they were sometimes of help, but rather limited. Seriously though, if you're going to the usual sites and know where you'll be going (restaurants etc) and staying (hotel/hostel), just print the relevant information out in Chinese characters before you leave for China.

Have now spent around 2 months in China this year on 3 different trips and have found the taxis excellent all over the country. If they dont know what you mean they tell you BEFORE you get in.

Best thing I got for Beijing was a download for my ipod which is a taxi guide. Pick a desitnation and it shows it in English, Manderin and Chinese lettering. I even emailed the company and they added three places I needed in their next update.

Hotels will normally write out where you want to go and always take a hotel business card to give to the driver to get back.
