Cycling Shanghai + surroundings by my own ??

I´m going to Shanghai next October and I would like to visit the surrounding cities/towns by bike.
I´m traveling with my boyfriend from Shanghai to Hangzhou, Suzhou, Zhouzhuang for a total period of 9 days.

I would like to know whether traveling by bike by your own is safe and convenient. I´d appreciate any information or suggestion about how to rent the bikes.

Bicycles aren't allowed on the highways and major roads, so you could have some trouble trying to figure out which roads you can use, apart from trying not to get lost.
Bicycle rental is not really that common, apart from around West Lake in Hangzhou. Even then, most bikes for rent are meant to be used for short distances (eg around West Lake) and not inter-city travel. Don't expect gears or good suspension.
