China’s new graduates starting salaries fall

A survery by Zhaopin.com, a leading Chinese job recruitment website, shows that the average starting salaries for new gradutates have decreased in the first half of 2009. The average starting salary for new university graduates in Shanghai in 2008 was 2,981 yuan a month: while this year it has fallen to 2,691yuan, a decrease of 9.73 percent. Shanghai remains the top ranking for the starting salaries for new university graduates. It was followed by Beijing, 2,655 yuan ( a decrease of 7.56 percent year-on-year), Shenzhen, 2575 yuan (a decrease of 5.2%), Guangzhou, 2,573 yuan ( a decrease of 5.2%).

Last year, the average starting salary for graduates with bachelor's degree was 2,094 yuan, master's degree 3,102 yuan and doctoral degrees 4,055 yuan. This year average salaries for master's degree holders will fall 11.18 percent to 2,741 yuan; bachelor's down 11.37percent to 1,825 yuan and doctoral down 2.64 percent to 3,948 yuan.
