Photographing Military and Police

Obviously, I would not want to photograph any installations, troop movements or police arresting people of just quelling disturbances.

However is there any problem shooting pictures of traffic cops directing traffic and the soldiers on ceremonial guard at the Forbidden City or raising the flag in the morning?

I have photographed many things in China, I was warned never to point camera at police or military, not that I would want to.
I did on one occasion have my memory card taken away by police for photographing in a downtown area of Foshan. I didnt understand fully what they were saying but the images were of a run down/derelict building, I thought it was empty but people were living in it.
