Hangzhou - Wuhan - Yichang - 3 Gorges/Yangtze - Chongqing - Shanghai

guest52074 Hello Everybody

I have booked air tickets to arrive and depart from Hangzhou for 11 days around coming mid-autumn festival. As I have been to both Shanghai, Huangshan and Hangzhou/Suzhou, I am thinking of spending those days around the water-towns and Wuyuan. With just a a week before departure now, I decided to do the 3 Gorges/Yangtze trip instead, and if possible, add in Wuyuan. While I am rushing thro guidebooks and online surfing, I hope you can give me some tips fast as the cheaper airline tickets are going fast around the mid-autumn festival. My questions are:

1) Is early October too hot to do the Yangtze river ? How is it compared to January ? Will it be rainy ?
2) Is Chongqing & Yangtze river better done from Hangzhou or Guilin ? I will have 10 days in Guilin in January.
3) Is there any daily Shanghai - Wuhan/or Yichang overnight bus ?
4) Is it convenient to do Wuyuan first and then to Wuhan ? How can I get from Wuyuan to Wuhan ?
5) Which direction is more interesting ? from Yichang to CQ or CQ to Yichang ?
6) How much time/days do i need for the trip(5) ?

I know those are a lot of questions but if anyone can just answer any part of it, I will very happy. I plan to do the trip on my own without joinming a tour.

1) I wouldn't recommend the 3 Gorges cruise at ANY time of the year. I found it a royal waste of my moneyand time. If you want my full trip report and candid photos, email me at yahoo.com|ellyse99 and put "TravelChinaGuide" in the subject line.
2) Neither!
3) Why not take overnight train instead? That would be more comfortable and safer than the bus.
4) No direct train as Wuyuan doesn't have a train station. The direct bus only runs in April around the rapeseed flower season. I would suggest that you get a bus to a train station (perhaps Jingdezhen or Shangrao) then a train to Wuhan.
5) I don't see any major difference, but Chongqing -- Yichang would be faster.
6) Probably at least 10 days if you don't want to rush.
