We will arrive in Xinggang port on 30/04/2010 and want to travel down to Yichang dock for the Yangtze River cruise by soft sleeper train. How do we get tickets in advance. Are prepared to stay in Xingang one night if required.

GUEST04938 "Xinggang"? Where is Xinggang? Do you mean " Xingang" 新港 in Tianjin? Or it is a new port in other Chinese cities I have never heard of?

The 3 nearest train stations to Xingang (in Tanggu district of Tianjin) would be Tanggu, Tianjin then Beijing.
No direct trains from Tanggu or Tianjin to Yichang, there's one from Beijing: K49 (1353--1125) 21h32min
From the port to Beijing you could take a taxi to either Tanggu or Tianjin train station, then a fast C train to Beijing South train station.
However considering the amount of time needed, it might be better to fly instead!
If you need help with train tickets, email me at yahoo.com|ellyse99 and put "TravelChinaGuide" and your own username (eg Kathleen50) in the subject line.

GUESTALAN Hello,
Four of us will be travelling on the 11th November 2011 from central Beijing to The Tianjing International Cruise Home Port (not Xingang). We wish to travel by bullet Train. Is it best to book tickets to Tanggu or to Tianjin? Also, I have read that there is limited luggage space on the train and a free weight limit of 20kg. What would the charge be if we are over the 20 kg and will we have difficulty boarding the train with a suitcase each.

I appreciate any advice you can give me.

Thanks

Alan

You need to take bullet trains and get off at Tanggu Station. The regulation says that each passenger can take 20 kilograms luggage at most. But the railway staff seldom check your luggage weight. And there is a place on the train where you can put your big luggage.

After arriving at Tanggu Station, you have two choices. The first is to catch a taxi. It costs around CNY50-80 and takes around 30-40 minutes. The second is to take a public bus. First take bus from the Tanggu Station to Shiminguangchuang (市民广场) and then take No.513 bus and get off at the terminus. It takes around 1 hour if you take No.513 bus. The ticket fare is CNY 4. I think it is innconvenient for you because you have bring luggage.
