Canadaguy, you should come to Shaanxi Province. Shaanxi People say "这里(here)" , "那里(there)", "这个(this)" and “那个(that)”in an interesting way. Strangers can't understand it.

Next time I'm in China (whenever that will be) I'll try to visit Shaanxi. :)
BTW, how would you write 'here' and 'there' in pinyin?

Hi Canadaguy, Here (zhè lǐ) There (nà li) . Well, Shaanxi, especially Xi'an is really worth a visit.

When I was in China and also at my sister-in-law's (she speaks Mandarin) I always heard/hear 'zhe li'.
I thought it meant 'this' but now I know it means 'here'.

I heard zhe li much more often than na li.

You are welcome, CANADAGUY. Next time you learn how to say Here and There in Shaanxi dialect and then you can say it to your sister-in-law. I am sure that she will be quite surprised.
