Teaching English In China?

guest39018 Hi Everybody,

I will be graduating from high school early in the winter of 2010 and was thinking of traveling the far east before applying to college. What are the chances of a smart 18 year old native english speaker landing an English teaching job in China without a BA?

Very slim I would think, but that depends on the type of teaching job you would accept. Better jobs need better qualifications. Officially you need a degree to get a visa. Usually you need a TEFL or equivalent and some teaching experience. Jobs are available for unqualified people but are a little risky for the unwary. Too many promises and not enough action. You could find yourserlf in China sans Z visa and return ticket. Have you lived away from home before? Do you know what living conditions are like in China? I think it would be better to consider this after you have a university degree.

Gaffer’s advice is very sound Young Guest; however, there are plenty of students in Beijing teaching English and not all of them native speakers either.
They stay in hostels and use the money earned, if any as a sort of off shore extended schoolies week.
Just make sure that Mum and Dad are happy to top up your ATM card though before you leave.
