The boats travelling from Guilin to Yangshou are not a 'ferries' but tourist boats, up to 200 a day. You can buy a tour ticket at hotels or travel agents in Guilin. The bus takes you to the start some way out of city and the trip lasts about 4 hours. Most tours give you a couple of hours in Yangshuo and then take you back to Guilin. If you want to stay in Yangshou overnight, you can simply tell them you won't be returning. Note that there you cannot return upstream to Guilin on the tourist boats, so you would have to take a bus....maybe your tour operator will be willing to let you on a tour bus the next day....maybe! I cannot advise on hotels as I stay in hostels or very budget hotels, though there are plenty of hotels in both places. Just do a web search and you should find plenty of options in the hotel booking sites.

Don't bother with the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, just take the bus instead. For hotels it would be wise to indicate your preferred price range.

Catch the bus to Yangshuo and avoid the river cruises. It's more fun to go on a bamboo boat (especially if you are a couple). I also recommend a bicycle trip with a guide. You will find lots of guides in Yangshuo. If you like "interesting" hotels, follow the signs up the stairs from the bus station to DIY Hotel. Comfortable but quirky rooms and very chatty (in Chinese ) owner Sister Lu. They have a great guide there too. http://www.ysdiy.com/ 联系店长 QQ:692990113 店长:余姐 电话:0773-8818281 手机:13788746346

When would you be going to Yangshuo? I'd suggest that you stay at Li River Retreat (http://www.li-river-retreat.com). The owner Alf should be able to help you out with hiring a bamboo raft for your phototaking needs, and also with your photography enquiries. :)
