[2008-11-24 15:55:09]The Baimang Snow Mountain, with perennial snow-capped peaks, stands in the southeast of Deqin County of Yunnan, between the Jinsha and Lancang rivers.

From afar, the peaks look like a cluster of hurtling snow-horses, hence the name "Baima Mountain" by local Tibetans. On its west and east are deep canyons carved from the Lancang and Jinsha rivers, and on the bank opposite the Lancang River are the 13 peaks of the Meili Mountain.

About 82 kilometers northward along the Yunnan-Tibet Highway is Benzilan, the ancient gorge leading into Tibet. Further up the highway are the Gedandong Bamboo Forest Temple and the Botanic Park as well as other scenic spots. The highway cuts through the Baimang Nature Reserve and most of the scenic spots are located on either side of the highway.

Located in the mid-section of the Hengduan Mountain range, the Baimang Mountain covers a total area of 187,977 hectares with the main peak rising 5,640 meters above sea level. Most peaks are over 4,000 meters above sea level, with 27 of them more than 5,000 meters high.

The Baimang Mountain is a good alternative for frustrated climbers. It is Yunnan's largest and highest national reservation area, with fantastic views of typical vertical landscape of snow mountains, glaciers, forests, lakes and canyons, rare plants and animals, and geographical wonders. Most forests are untouched. There are well-preserved frigid-zone primeval forests of alpine coniferous trees, and in summer the mountain becomes a sea of azalea (large pink, purple, white or yellow flowers). This area is also the main habitat of Yunnan golden monkeys, a rare animal under national protection.

Summer is the best season to visit the Baimang Mountain, with stunning scenery of azure skies, melting snow, flaming azaleas, brooks and romping monkeys. The attraction is not accessible between December and April when the roads are closed due to heavy snow
