BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- The Kunsha Airport in Ngari Prefecture, western Tibet, is expected to open to traffic next July, according to the construction headquarters.

So far, construction of the parking apron and a runway has been finished, meteorological radars have been installed and air traffic controllers adjusted.

Work on the airport began in May, 2007, with a total investment of 1.64 billion yuan RMB (24 million U.S. dollars). Lying at an altitude of 4,272 m, the airport has a 51,000-m parking apron with four parking stands.

The terminal, with a floor space of 4,000 sq m, is decorated in the Tibetan style and is expected to handle 120,000 passengers by 2020.

Since Ngari Prefecture is located in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, its harsh weather conditions and oxygen deficiency make construction of the airport even harder, said Hu Jinfa, director of the construction headquarters.
