itinerary/e-ticket/invitation letter requirement for visa - I have none, help? (NZ)

guest22247 we (2, from new zealand) are flying to hong kong on 17th december and return on 7th jan. after christmas we want to travel to dali by train for a few days and stay in a hostel. on the chinese embassy website there is this requirement for tourist visa:

Travel itinerary prepared by travel agency, or copy of your airline ticket (e-ticket), or invitation letter from relatives, friends in China including the inviters' personal details and contact information.

since we are travelling by train, not plane, (and without a travel agent) we are unable to provide any of these. should I go to a chinese travel agent and see if they can book the trains and make an itinerary? or will I be able to get visas without these things?

A late response to the original question. Most travellers do not have to provide exact details just a list of places they intend to visit., A few nationalities are required to supply more exact details
