I am making my second trip to China April 16 to May 10. I have read all the warnings about the May day crowds. I arrive in BJ and leave from HK so my plan is to travel south at a leisurely pace. Pingyao-Xian-Chengdu-Guilin. Since the holiday is only 3 days in 2010 (Sat,Sun,Mon) can I expect normal travel crowds 1 or 2 days before and after or is it still chaotic by say, May 5th. Hope this is clear! Thanks in advance

I think transport would be fine after 5/5, but it might be busy on the few days before the holiday.

A belated thanks to Ellyse for your advice. I should have known you would reply. In fact, I did not see it until today. Anyway, since I am traveling alone I was afraid to risk trying to get train tickets around the holiday. I am traveling 8 to 30 April arrive in Shanghai.

I might be able to help with train tickets. You can email me at yahoo.com|ellyse99 -- put "TravelChinaGuide" and your own username (eg SlimJim) in the subject line.
