Just don't go to Xitang on a Chinese long weekend holiday. My friends and I went during the Dragon Boat Festival and Xitang was packed to the gills with people, you could've easily fallen into the canals! We ended up getting up at 0600 to get some decent photos, and left by 0730 as it was starting to be crowded again.
