Dali or Lijiang?

Hi all,

I'll be traveling to Kunming and Chengdu in May. I plan to travel a bit beyond each city. For those who have been to both Dali and Lijiang, which would you recommend to someone who only has time to visit one?

I read in the Lonely Planet guide that both cities have had a growing problem with women hiking alone being targeted for robbery. Does anyone have a sense of how common this is?

I have been to both, once to Dali and twice to Lijiang. Out of which I'd prefer Lijiang.

ELLYSE, could you more specific about Lijiang, since I plan on October to visit this area.

Don't go in the 1st week of October, whatever you do.
There's no real "why" that I can name to compare the two. I just like Lijiang better.
