hi there - can anyone tell me if it's quicker to get to Xi'an from Beijing or Shanghai?? Would you recommend train travel? also, we are contemplating taking the train from Beijing to Shanghai - would you recommend it? How long is the train journey? Thanks in advance

Marginally faster from Beijing, though there're overnight Z trains from both Beijing (11 hours) and Shanghai (14 hours).
Train for Beijing -- Shanghai is fine.

I took an overnight train from Xi'an to Beijing and it was the perfect length of time since you are asleep for most of it. My travel was in 2008, but I'll mention that if you take the train back from Xi'an to Beijing, don't rely on the English language departure sign. It wasn't updated regularly, and I nearly missed my train.

Do you mean in the waiting room? I would recommend that non-English speakers take note of the train number and departure time instead, those are no problem to read even if the rest of the words are in Chinese.
