There's a daily Nanning -- Hanoi train, as well as a Beijing -- Hanoi train which stops twice weekly in Nanning.
If you don't manage to get tickets on either of these, you can also try the daily Nanning -- Hanoi bus: http://www1.yunde.cn/home/article_show.asp?id=91

There are buses from several locations in Nanning. I recommend staying at the Lotusland Hostel in Nanning (google it) where they will supply all travel info and provide a free visa application service if you haven't already got a visa. (I am currently staying at Lotusland on my 4th visit)

Sorry, I haven't had personal experience on them. But I've read reports that they're quite ok.
