I will be arriving Shenzhen Mar 13 (late night) & departing Mar 20 (very late).

One requirement is to visit Shantou where I plan to spend about 1~2 days (my parents want to visit friends). We are a party of 5 people (3 adults 2 children).

Most important, I would like to know what is best way to travel from Shenzhen to Shantou & back again.

We do not mind a longer trip as long as we can do some sight-seeing along the way. If no better way, we probably want to travel in different manner each way.

I roughly know train RMB116 8+hrs, bus RMB150 4+hrs.

Please also recommend places to stay in both Shantou & Shenzhen.

Thanks for your help.

I found out some more info.
If you are willing to change trains, the train travel time can be reduced to 6+hrs.

"Best" is subjective. If you don't mind the splurge and want the flexibility of time, then hire your own vehicle and driver. Hiring for round-trip would be more economical than one-way.

How much would hiring own vehicle costs? For 2D2N or 3D2N?

I have hired vehicle for daytrip in China before for around RMB1000 per day.

The problem is I do not know the area well enough to tell the driver where to go. From experience, I find that the trip is best if the hirer knows exactly what he wants.

If you were doing it, how would you suggest the itinerary?
Assuming we leave Shenzhen around noon Mar 14 and want to be back afternoon/evening of Mar 16. Looking for suggested rotuing and places to see. Assume Mar 15 will be spent around Shantou.

The group is fairly disparate. So our interests would be broad, as I am looking for something for everybody.
The adults are reasonable interested in scenery and some (not too deep) culture/history.

The kids have no interest in the above so I need to sprinkle in some amount of thrills for them.
They will tolerate certain amount of scenery as long as there are some opportunity to run around and make a mess.
The kids also like any antique/old-fashion activity that they can participate - boat rides, animal rides, rickshaw rides, etc..
Due to kids presence, I would prefer itinerary with each travel stretch not to exceed 2 hrs (4 hrs max).
The train will break the limit but I assume they will put up with that for once - novelty.

We are not particularly interested in shopping - maybe a small amount of shopping for special interest items...
We are game on food - anything local & interesting would be great.

Hope this helps.

One more thing:

Any good place to stay? 3 or 4 stars would do..
If I am searching on the net, what sort of region/district should I look for?
LuoHu? or Central Business district?

Prefer places near public transport .
First stay near bus station? As we arrive late night & want to take noon bus.

Second stay is more flexible though being close to the rail network would be helpful if we plan to visit the theme parks.
Understand the underground goes straight to "Windows on the World" or "Happy World" - for the kids.

Regards

Window of the World or Happy Valley, Slendid China etc. are in OCT(Overseas Chinese Town) There is metro link to the Luohu Railway or bus station.
There is many hotels in OCT too, such as OCT Transcontinental, The Crown, Seaview Hotel. City Inn...

OK, will consider staying in OCT on my second pass through Shenzhen.

I did not know the bus station is accessible by metro.
In that case, I suppose any place near metro station is good enough...?
