I think Bob's suggestion is good. The point of travelling is to get yourself relax. If you take too long to prepare for anything and make it a task, then the trip would loose its most fantastic part. Besides, as Bob said, China is a nice and friendly country and at the same time, safe. So just relax and see what happens.

But... not only college students here are willing to help... Most Chinese are friendly and would love to help people as much as they could. And even if the college students do, it's probably because they want to help you, not that they want to practice their English... If you want some evidence... The students who are brave enough to speak English with foreigners probably have the self-confidence of their English level. Even if not, the ones who try to grasp any chance to practice their English must be a great fun of it, which would give them a great gift to be on a grood level of English...

I don't know why but when I typed a bit longer, I couldn't see the lines. So I decided to put a new thread... Anyway, my point is that Chinese don't help people because they want to get some benifit, but because they want to help... Well... Bob, I'm not going to start a debate of whether it's true, it's a generalization or some extreme words from a Chinese. So I think I would like to add it's just herbeat's opinion and what she saw and did... ^-^ Ooops, I think I might give you a chance to be my grammer and writting teacher again... (Thanks in advance, hehe...)
And thank Bob to recommand me as a tour guide for him in Beijing^-^ I'm very grateful...

Chengdu and Kunming are "gateway" cities for Sichuan and Yunnan provinces respectively. They're perfectly nice cities in their own right, but I would suggest skipping them this time round. Firstly, they're relatively far to reach especially by train, which would waste a lot of your available time on transport. Secondly, it would be a huge pity to go there and then not go further into the provinces -- you don't have time anyway, I would strongly recommend that you save them for another trip when you have more time for these 2 provinces in particular.
I would suggest that you spend more time around the cities in the area surrounding Shanghai -- there'e plenty of nice destinations in this region. Hangzhou, Nanjing, Yangzhou, Suzhou, the water villages, even Huangshan though you say you're more interested in urban rather than rural destinations!
You could do roughly the Shanghai -- Xi'an -- Beijing triangle, then the direct train Beijing -- Hong Kong.
When are you ending the trip? The 1st few days of May are the Labour Day holidays, strongly recommend that you already be in Hong Kong at that time.
If you've any more queries, email me at yahoo.com|ellyse99 and put "TravelChinaGuide" and your own username (eg Blizzard) in the subject line.
