Is that 40-50 USD? I would suggest that you try CityTel Inn, Tang Yue Hotel and perhaps Days Inn Forbidden City as well -- the last one is more expensive.
If you've any more queries, email me at yahoo.com|ellyse99 and put "TravelChinaGuide" and your own username (eg PSDIR) in the subject line.

I agree with the recommendation of Ellyse. I have stayed at Days Inn Forbidden City twice. It is an excellent location and easy walking to so many places. It is only a few hundred metres from the square.

The downside is the hotel is not run well. Reception struggles to cope with non-chinese visitors. Last time we paid for our room in advance. As they could find no record of this at first we couldnt check in until we paid a cash bond equivalent to our room cost AND also a service bond of RMB100 per day for our intended stay.

On the first day they found we had paid, but we still didnt get our money back until we checked out 7 days later.

Also eat out as the in-house food is often very expensive compared with local restaurants. I made the mistake of ordering a beer without asking the cost and just one small glass of local beer cost me 37rmb. I bought a 600ml bottle nearby for 6rmb. Also never take a taxi from the courtyard. There is a little scam with the parking. A driver wanted 80 rmb up front to take us to the drum tower when it is only a rmb10 fare on the meter from just outside.

On the plus side the housekeeping is excellent, the rooms small but comfortable, free internet in the room and the breakfast (make sure it is included in the room price) is good. While I may not go back myself I would still recommend it for the price.
