I am visiting China for the first time in May, flying to Kunming. My idea is to travel independently looking at Botanic Gardens. Any advice would be appreciated.

Botanic Gardens in China? Or in Kunming? Your post is a bit vague.

8 in China including Kunming Hainan Canton Nanking. Please excuse the spelling it is from a book 40 years old!

Canton = Guangzhou Nanking = Nanjing Sorry, I can only say I do not agree (in the extreme) with the suggested itinerary for 8 days!

GUEST16815 | I will be in China for 3 weeks in order to visit the 8 gardens. Is it too short? I will travel by bus and train but probably fly back to Kunming at the end. |

What 8 gardens are you referring to???

Your book is 40 years old??? You may be interested to know that as of 2006, there were 160 Botanical Gardens in China... and I suspect there may even be a few more added now - although they will not be especially mature. I have visited Botanical Gardens in Nanjing and Shenyang, both wonderful. Here is a list of 142 Botanical Gardens in China: http://www.bgci.org/ May I humbly suggest, that you plan a 3 week itinerary around this, more recent, list. Have fun, LC.

Sorry, I should add that you will be able to travel freely, and independently to most of the gardens. A few are even listed on this very website, with info on bus routes, prices and opening times etc. Beijing Botanic Gardens has its own website in English here: http://www.beijingbg.com/ LC

I agree, I'm somewhat bewildered by the mention of "eight" botanical gardens. Unless, you mean to say the 8 classical Chinese gardens which are considered the epitome of private and royal gardens? Those aren't called botanical gardens though.

GUEST16817 | The gardens on my list in the order I want to visit them are as follows: Kunming Hainan Guangzhou Lushan Wuhan Hangchow Nanjing Beijing |

I'm still bewildered. In any case, have you tried pinpointing these places on a map? They're all over China. You're likely to spend a lot of money on transport if you're going all over the place. I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but trying to make this more logical!
