A serviced apartment here in Shenzhen may not save you much, but has its own features. (actually a bit more expensive than buget hotels like Shenzhen home Inn, Shenzhen 7days, Shenzhen Motel168 etc. However it allows more space, privacy etc. This kind of apts are becoming popular with Chinese, not sure whether foreigners would interested at them as well.
