Hey,

I've got a job offer from a guy running a tour company in shanghai. Problem is that I need a drivers licsense - and to get that I need a chinese working visa, which he cannot get for me.
Does anyone know any way to go around this? What if I would go there and work as an english teachers and get a visa that way, could I then use that Visa or a Residence permit and work for his company? Anyone have any clues on how to get around all that?

You can buy (illegally) a drivers licence if you are insane enough to want to drive in a Chinese city

You cannot work legally in China unless your prospective employer provides you with a Z visa which is then exchanged for working/residence permit. Only businesses registered with the government can provide a Z visa. Z visa are only provided for people who have "special skills" i.e skills which are not available in China.

A work permit only permits you to work at the original company with which you have a contract. If you leave the job you lose you work permit.

Having said all that, for people who are willing to risk getting caught and being deported, they could work on a tourist or business visa and keep renewing. Then there is the "other" route. Money talks. You can buy almost any visa/permit you need....at a price.

Thanks for a great reply!

I assume he'll let met work for him without the visa then, since he can't get one.
So as long as I can get a drivers license that would be good. So where does one buy (ilegally) a drivers license?

What would it mean to get deported? Would it include a money fine as well, or would I just get kicked out?

How long could you keep renewing a tourist visa?

Do you have any idea hopw much money you'd need to talk the talk, and where to get such connections?

Life in China revolves around "guanxi". This is a social network built up through friends, relatives and work colleagues. You might notice that few jobs are advertised in China, because someone always knows someone looking for a job. If you want something, someone will know someone who can obtain that thing. It might cost only a dinner, but could cost 1000's yuan. Obviously there are no official channels to buy illegal documents....but someone will know where to obtain them.

You can get genuine visas and licences...for a fee as Gaffer says. Yo would probably be best to find a visa agent and pay the fees asked: they have the guanxi (they buy it!!. Some have posted in TCG, but you can find them for Shanghai by web searching.

You can work on an F visa if you are employed overseas and assigned to China by an employer including on a contract to a tor operator, but few Chinese can be bothered with such niceties. In many cities you can get an F visa locally and work... usually with no hassles from the authorities....again that 'gaunxi'

You should also consider the practicalities of driving: if you are involved in an accident you will be to blame as the foreigner...and in practice probably were at fault because driving in China is so different. Few foreigners drive, most employ local drivers (actually, people who claim to be drivers but would not be allowed on the road in most countries....after all, consider how many of them get their licences...by guanxi!!!).

A friend's wife bought him a drivers license for his birthday. He duly went out and bought a car but having never driven before couldn't handle the stick shift. He replaced the car with auto shift and now seems to be getting along fine. As his passenger I don't feel more at risk than in a taxi However, if you survive the boarding stampede and don't get robbed I think buses are safer
