Hi

I am in Beijing for a day and a half. The first day I'll do the wall. The half day I'd like to go to the Summer Palace, there do not seem to be any half day tours to the palace. Does anyone know if it is safe to take a taxi to the summer palace, and then look around on my own?

If you get a red taxi and make sure it has a metre you will be perfectly safe. The summer palace really needs at least a full day to do it justice as its grounds cover such a vast area (its not just one building but many in what can only be described as a large park) though you can see the highlights in a half day, make sure you don't miss the long corridor there.

Is the red taxi the official taxi in Beijing?

Besides the red taxi, what other mode of transport will bring me to the Summer Palace, i.e. can I take the metro or bus from Beijing city?

Is it easy to catch a taxi back to the city from the Summer Palace?
