Unfortunately, he didn't make it since his great-granddaughter was killed in a road accident. The death of his great-granddaughter was a heavy blow to this old man who is 91 years old. Thus, the Nelson Mandela Foundation said that it was inappropriate for him to attend the opening ceremony. Zenani Mandela, 13 years old girl, was killed in a car accident when she returned home after the World Cup Kick-off Concert held at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. According to the news, the car overturned as it came off a slip road on the M1 motorway. Yet the driver was reportedly unhurt and has not been named. However, he faces a culpable homicide charge since the police found out he was drunk. And he will be charged with drink-driving. PS: South Africa and Mexico tied the score (1:1) at the opening match. The match between France and Uruguay also came to a tie(0:0).

The president of China Soccer Association was stopped on the road for 4 hours and finally he missed the opening ceremony and the opening match.
