Why do you have to take the sleeping bus? It costs around 110-150 RMB and takes around 10 hours. Now direct trains from Kunming to Lijiang have operated. I suggest you take trains at Lijiang East Railway Station. K9608/5 leaves at 21:55 and arrives Kunming at 7:22. It takes 9 hours and 27 minutes. It doesn’t stop at any stations on the way. Ticket prices: 130 RMB (upper hard berth), 137 RMB (middle hard berth) and 141 RMB (lower hard berth), 200 RMB (upper soft berth) and 207 RMB (lower soft berth) and 614 RMB (VIP room). If you want to go during the day, you can take 5654/1. It departs at 9:55, passes by Dali at 11:36 and arrives at Kunming at 21:55. It takes 11 hours and 20 minutes in all. Please note that this train is non air-conditioned. Ticket prices: 41 RMB (hard seat), 87 RMB (upper hard berth), 93 RMB (middle hard berth) and 96 RMB (lower hard berth).

Thanks, JIMMYB, you are full of interesting info! I was undecided between bus and train because I was interested in making the experience of the night bus. Maybe I'll make it in another part of the trip!

Experience in the nught bus? Madgrin, cats and owls go mousing at night, a hush fell over all the cities. There's nothing more depressing than spending the journey alone in a night bus.
