I just returned from the 11 days China tour. On the last day of the tour, we were brought to a jade store where the "boss" happened to be in town from Thailand because he was there to be with 89 year old dying father. He happened to stop by the store when we were there and wanted to give us a personal tour of his store. He didn't want us to buy anything that we did not need. He also emphasized at the beginning of his presentation that they absolutely do not discount any items in the store. He then described how you can identify a fake jade from a real jade by cutting a glass with the jade. He then offered to give each of us (22 of us in the tour group) a jade pendant and a necklace for free. Then someone from the group said she could not accept such an expensive from him and he quickly changed it from free to $50 American dollars so that we don't feel bad accepting the free gift. He then sized up some of us and determined some of us were worthy of a visit to his private gallery room where he supposedly want to present us with a special gift at a big discount where it supposed to worth $6,000 US dollars and offered to us for $1,900 US dollar. When we told him we didn't want it, the price was dropped to $1,500. Good thing, we didn't get it because I am sure it did not even worth close to $1,500. As for the free gift, they turned out to be fakes and did not even worth the $50 US dollar that we paid. Since $50 was not an enormous amount and it was not last day, none of us complaint to the tour company but in hindsight, I think we should and they should not have taken us to that store at all. You should especially be alert if the store offer you anything for free or at a substantial discount when they supposedly do not discount anything in their store.

I am very angry cos I have been scammed of about RMB600 plus on a fake ruby necklace. I am normally very cautious dealing with these Chinese liars but for once I let down my guard. This happened in a guangzhou day tour. The shop assistant told me that the necklace was an 18 carat white gold.
The story was the same - grandfather story. I believed now that the Chinese authority has really not enough manpower to monitor such cheats. The country is too big and the number of tourists going there is too many.
Bad reputation to the country. Shameful acts for a country which claims to be so rich.

Dear Theresa, I'm sorry to hear your sad story. I couldn't believe but I do know that the same ghost of fraud is still walking the land. And actually I have personnally witnessed such fraud played on fellow citizens. I work as escort interpreter and I always keep my eyes wide open, less to prevent my clients' lose of money than to prevent the loss of my own face...
