Carrefour is to close its only store in Xi’an on July 28. I’ve been there several times. My impression is that there are few customers inside the store, not like other supermarkets, for example, Ren Ren Le. No wonder it will be closed. In 2009, Carrefour retreated from Russia. This year, it has closed 21 stores in Belgium. Now, it has retreated from Xi’an. A source discloses that Carrefour plans to sell its franchises in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. The purpose is to raise money to enter Indian market.

Compared with Carrefour, I prefer Walmart. Just my preference. The competition is fierce. If you lose, you will bear the consequence. Retreat is their best choice.

Seems Carrefour has been running down. If no measurments will be taken ,I think it will retreat from the whole world soon or later.

I don't know it is good news or bad news. Carrefour might get back to Xi'an again. It will show up as a joint venture.

I disagree with you on this one Jimmy. I reckon that Carrefour is the best foreign supermarket in China. The bread, the cheese... then French are the European counterparts of China in respect of food. Walmart....oh dear, Yankee junk food in comparison. I have found Ren Ren Le to be good but as a standard Chinese supermarket, it doesn't carry much of the foreigner stuff... fine, that's addressing its main customer base.

The only western food that can be comparable with Chinese food is French food in terms of delicacy and taste. Carrefour is the leading co in first entry into China franchise stores market. But its high end market of food supplies is being replaced by other Chinese franchisees that I heard the Walmart is going to acquire to further dominate retailing mkt. BTW, forget about Chinese food overseas coz they are all fake and junk!.

Carrefour is the best foreign supermarket in China. Really? I have been to Carrefour in Xian several times. The commodities are not as good as some other supermarkets such as Walmart, Ren Ren Le and Hua Run Wan Jia. There are not many imported commodities. Possibly, it has something to do with their management. Ren Ren Le is generally good. However, they do have problems. Once I took a pair of slippers, I found out that the price was strange. The price on the label was much cheaper. When I went to pay the bill, the cashier told me that the price on the label was wrong. The price she told me was more expensive. Then I put the slippers on the shelf and went away. Some other people had the same experience like me too. Hua Run Wan Jia is just so so. It has merged with Jia Le. Personally, I like original Jia Le very much. The prices are acceptable and the layout is reasonable. But the guard at the gate will check your receipts when you finish shopping and go out. This is unacceptable. It makes me think that they don't trust me and suspect that I steal something from the supermarket. As for Walmart, I went to the Walmart on East Street in Xi'an. Their service is good. And you can find more imported things there. My frist impression is good.
