My next piece of advice would always be careful about buying where many guides suggest. They are on some hefty commissions to take you to "museums" and "factories" that are nothing but tourist traps. Great wall visits are famous for this, as are many people who stop you and invite you to visit galleries. There are many tea shops that are much more affordable than the major tourist locations.

Also if your tour doesnt include meals or you have days on your own, always eat out. A meal in a local restaurant can cost 10-20% of the cost of a meal in a major hotel.
