I have been visiting all the possible websites and there are some contradictions or unclear information. I am a Canadian and have visited China twice in the past 5 years. I am an ESL teacher with 15 years experience. I want to go and spend one year in Shanghai to teach. I have been reading up on job offers, but what I would really like to do is go to Shanghai and once there look for a teaching contract. I'm not comfortable with the idea of signing a contract from Canada. I would like to meet potential employers in person, see the school and discuss employment face to face. Is that something that is possible? Is it possible for me to simple get a basic visitor's visa and have it changed to a Z visa once I have found work that satisfies me? Of course that would have to be while my initial visa was still valid My father owns an apt in Shanghai so I have a place to live.(fyi) I have read a lot about Foreign Experts certificates. From my understanding there are 2 categories. I would like to apply for mine before leaving Canada. How do I go about that? Is it possible? I believe I read somewhere that the Education one can be asked for directly by the "expert" without proof of employment... If I understood correctly, I need two recommendation letters from my employers in Canada+application form+motivation letter from me+valid passport+bachelor's degree and a minimum 2 years experience. If that is the case, Where and how do I contact the proper Chinese bureau? I want to leave asap and be there for the beginning of the new school year. Told my present employer that I am taking a sabbatical starting now! I really want to do this. Thank you, Rose

Hello Rose

Yes you can go to China as a tourist and find a job, then prcess the application to get a Z visa. However, with the World Expo there things are tighetr and you might run into a few difficulties....but not insurmountable. In theory, a Z visa can be issued in mainland China, but there is not much evidence of this happening. However, you should be able to go to HK and get the visa. As you are going to Shanghai you also have many visa agents there who will for a fee facilitate visa applications. However, most employers should be able to do handle most of the issues, except perhaps getting a z visa locally. Bear in mind that the z visa is only valid one month during which time your employer will organise the medical, and other formalities.

You will need two refernces from recent employers or individuals, that's not normally a strict requirement. Don't worry about the expert certificate as it is orgnised by the employer.

There is no central organisation of jobs, you can look on-line or ask around in Shanghai.

Most good jobs include accommodation on site, though language centres (which I would avoid like the plague) might not.
