Does Philanthropy become a new symbol for wealthy?

guestTomjoy As we all know, dozens of billionaires pledge their fortunes to charity. Does philanthropy become a new status symbol of the wealthy?

We judge rich persons about how many cars they own and how much their houses worth. Philanthropy is about how much money they gave away. It seems like donation is turn to be a trendy for the rich. No matter how they got recognition or not, they caught attention. It is nothing bad to take an active part in the activities benefiting to the public anyway, and admirable. What do you think? they lost more in property or they has gained more in reputation?

GUEST2117 Not exactly. Jet Li is a good example. After escaping from the Tsunami, he has suddenly realized that nothing is more valuable than life. Then he created One Foundation to help those who are in need of help. Some people spend their whole life to accumulate wealth. But they should know that they can not take anything away when their days come.

Some wealthy people do charity for certain reasons, for vanity or fame. But I still believe that some people just do good things out of their consciousness.

But as we know, he runs One Fundation and this foundation believes that: "1 person + 1 dollar/yuan + 1 month = 1 big family". He as well as Wong, Fei Faye just did merciful deeds with money of others. And I don't believe if they will not own profit themselves.

Jet Li takes out RMB200 thousand from his fundation in mudslides in Zhouqu, that is less than an individual subscriptions...

GUEST13023 There are basically two kinds of rich: those who inherit and those who create their own wealth.
Those who inherit are usually extremely selfish with a strong feeling of entitlement, so they rarely share their wealth.
Those who made their fortune, give back a little more, and there are many reasons why:
1. they never forgot where they came from, and like to help the needy. These are the true heroes.
2. they are looking for attention and praise, to be seated on a pedestal. When they do give, they make sure everybody knows about it.
3. they take advantage of tax breaks.
4. they have nobody to leave their money to, or worse, they have children, but they don't think they deserve any of that money.
Whatever the reason and as much as they give, there is very little impact on the poor section, which seems to grow faster than the donations.
