Why do some shipments get held up in Customs?

I have heard of shipments being held up by Customs, I do not know if it is true yet I heard that if the shipper/agent has a history or past of shipping counterfiet goods then this may happen , I only want to purchase legitimate products yet with the Holiday Season fast approaching, I can not afford for any shipments to be held up , so I need to know how the shipping process actually works .I need all Tips to look out for or what to ask for FOB ,CIF ect. I will be very thankful for any and all replies and Reliable Shipping Contacts from China to the USA.

Dear mister Akenan, if you are planing to buy one cantainer goods you can speak with the shipping company which provide you the container, then then they have two kinds of service basicaly, One is you speak only for shipping by this way it would be normal price for the shipping.Another is pay more then normall price and custom clearing also they do for you,
I think you just speak for the normal shiping then just pay the tax to your government as it is all legitimate products.
If the goods are not up to one container you can share whith other business men ,For this you have to find big trading company, infact it is very easy to find.
If it is little goods, like 3-7 CBM sth like that..... you can use the shipping company service it is also safty, shipping they do for you custom you clear...... i am not able to tell you clearly because i am not awarable the rool in your country,
